Pevensey

Pevensey is a village and also civil parish in the Wealden area of East Sussex, England. The major town lies 5 miles (8 km) north-east of Eastbourne, one mile (1.6 kilometres) inland from Pevensey Bay. The negotiation of Pevensey Bay develops part of the parish. It was below that William the Conqueror made the landing in his intrusion of England in 1066 after going across the English Channel from Normandy, France. In 1207 the community was provided a royal charter by King John and was governed by Pevensey Corporation. With the decrease in the community's importance by the 19th century, the Corporation was ultimately dissolved in 1886 as well as the community shed its borough status. The documents of the Corporation are kept in the East Sussex Record Office at Lewes, as well as a voluntary body, the Pevensey Town Trust, was formed to take care of the property which had formerly belonged to the Corporation, most especially the Old Court House. Pevensey is now a town, with a church council consisting of twelve elected councillors.
