Bideford
Bideford is a traditional port town that's on the estuary of the River Torridge in North Devon, located in the southwest of England. The town's name can be translated as 'by the ford', with documents demonstrating that before the construction of a bridge, there was a ford at Bideford where the River Torridge is estuarine. At low tide, it's achievable, though not always safe, to wade across the river. Bideford currently is the main town of the Torridge local government district. Referring to the 2011 Census, the town contains a population of close to 17,000. Bideford is commonly famous for being the place through which the American GIs landed in 1942 during the Second World War. Originally positioned there to work in radar stations in North Devon, growing numbers of troops came over over the duration of the war. Bideford is renowned for its New Year's Eve celebrations. This consists of thousands of individuals from neighbouring towns and villages arriving in fancy dress outfits congregating on the quay for revelries along with a firework show. The event includes many local musicians. The town has a extensive background of communal New Year's Eve celebrations. A historical custom from 1605 was for citizens to attempt to cross the bridge in the time taken for the bells of St. Mary's church to chime at midnight. In the same year, the mayor established a trust fund to raise money to purchase food for the poor and elderly who applied at the Mayor's Parlour. This continues to be in place and takes place on New Year's Day.
